Age of Conan

Been waiting for this MMOG for a while. It is due out 10/30/07 and is the first ever "Mature" rated MMO. I've never read any of the Conan books but this game and features seem to be really good.

Sky: Now we can talk about Conan game and REH books. :)

I'm huge fan of REH. In fact I love REH books, short stories, etc. Unfortunately many new books ON REH have never been translated into my language.

I'd like to recommend you REH's Pictish books in which Picts fight against Roman Empire (Bran MakMorn), there are also wonderful short stories such as Marchers of Valhalla, Dig me no grave, Solomon Kane short stories.

The greatest REH's stories are those about Conan the Barbarian. DO NOT read Wolves beyond the border. It will be offensive to you. Picts in this short story are based on Indians. Just believe me.

Instead of this short story start reading Conan stories from... the last one! :) And by that I mean The hour of the dragon. An alternative title is Conan the conqueror. It was changed by Lin Carter and de Camp a little but it's still great. Try to find the original text entitled The hour of the dragon.

It was my first Conan and REH story I had read some 10 years ago. I can still remembrer reading it, I was 12-13 then, I was reading it beneath a huge lamp in the room of my parents waiting for my dad to come back home from work. Nice memories :)

Then read Pheonix on the sword, Black Colossus, Face in the bowl and then read all other Conan stories by REH.

Then read other REH stories. I'd strongly recommend reading Fire of Asurbanipal, House of Arabu then read the rest. Yes, some are not good, but the man was only 30 when he committed a suicide.

REH, Tolkien and Frank Herbert are three and the only three fantasy (by the way I treat Dune as a fantasy&sf hybrid :) ) authors I place over DG.

REH's style is very climatic, epic, picturesque (by the way read The thunder rider - it's about an Indian Comanche and read also Almuric - another novel which action taes place on a distant planet) and it's also very vivid.

DG style is not flowery, REH's even better in this. Believe me. :)

And stay clear and far away from Kull stories by REH. It is beyond my understanding why nearly each and every REH fan loves Kull stories. Kull is a Conan in a microscale, Kull is a cliched Conan for me.

Start reading REH from The hour of the dragon. Believe me. It's a wonderful masterpiece. Better even than DG as good as LOTR.

For you - in America it's so easy to get any book:

As to the game I must admit I do not know much about it nor have I ever played in any online game. In fact I haven't got enough time but such games are also not something that is to my taste. :) I never wanted to play in such games :)

I prefer to talk to people instead of playing with them :)

Before I get into the Age of Conan game, I'd like to read up a bit on the lore. I've wanted to do this for some time now but could never find any confirmation nor straight answers anywhere on what exactly the order the books were written. Now as best as I can tell, there is a collection of stories in 3 volumes starting with "The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian" which starts with the stories in the order that Howard wrote them beginning with "Phoenix on the Sword". I figure to read them in the order they were written would work for me best.

As I understand it, the character Kull was created before Conan. Again, never read those (haven't read any of Howard's stuff) but I did see the Kull movie. Wasn't too bad but was really cool to see a fellow Cherokee star in it (he was the priest in the movie...his name is Litefoot).

From what I understand, Howard's Conan books were very graphic and brutal and the upcoming game is supposed to reflect that. I can't wait :).

Order doesn't matter at all. They can all stand on their own :)

Indeed :) In fact, Phoenix on the sword, was initially written by REH as a Kull story and then, when for some reasons REH couldn't finish it in a satisfatory way he decided to rewrite it, add magic and then...

...Conan emerged out of nowhere in REH mind :)

Good to know it :)

As to the movie I enjoyed it and Sorbo was a good guy to act as Kull. THe movie would be better, had the budget been higher in my opinion :)

There is a lot of brutality in Conan short stories but they are brutal in their own unique way :)

Have a nice reading and write us please what you're thinking about REH stories :)

I always welcome another REH fan :)

After reading the first 13 Conan stories (I read them in the order they were written), I am REALLY looking forward to this game.
