A few points:
1) The Romans were not always the finest soldiers in the world.. The Legions were the best of their day, later Empire troops were no match for the Legions.
And the gladius was a wonderful close range weapon, but what happens when you face an 8 foot long spear?
2) Horse vs. Spear, spear usually wins and even more so when against a foe so reliant on their mounts. A Mongolian horseman would not charge his hrose into a wall of spears simply because the horse would almost always die and it would be hard to break the formation.
3) I feel sometimes that most peoples perception of the Spartans come from the 300. Which made them all fantastically gifted killers, which is not the case. They were the best soldiers in the world at the time, their discipline and training holding fast against many foes.
4) This whole notion of Sparta being 'rubbish' because they didn't conquer. Nonsense. They were a war-like people with regards to their war-fighting abilities, but they never really sought to subjegate Greece (although I suppose the Helots would disagree).
A dagger in the dark is worth a thousand swords at dawn.
His loyalty couldn't be bought at any price; but it could be rented remarkably cheaply.
