David Eddings Retd.?

Postby thomasofhookton » Fri Jul 11, 2008 11:12 am

Though I must thank him for introducing me to SCI/FI/HEROIC Fantasy. I gotta be honest and say "WTF were you thinking with the dreamers?"
Garion = Brilliant, Sparhawk = Excellent Althalus = gripping
Rivan codex = When i resume writing a must have!
The best bit about the Dreamers is .........
Will he write another book?
I'd feel duty bound to read it. However I'd wait until it's a Suxxex stationers for 99p

Hehehe, he almost went out with a bang already! :P

I haven't read any Eddings, but if what he's churning out now is really a rehash of his earlier work, then he should probably either call it a day or do something new.

I read Althalus, and the beginning of the Sparhawk series. Don't know about his latest books, but from what I have read I think he should go out with a bang.

Put it this way, the dreamer series was so bad the fire wouldnt touch it. I really hope that he has a sit down and a think and comes out fighting with an opus.

Don't get me wrong read one of them but do not be tempted to read the series!!!!
The Characterization and the story telling are there and book one is good. Alternitively read1 and 4 and then you have a begining and an end and miss the awful waste of time middle 2.

I liked the Belgariad - amusing dialogue, entertaining characters. But I felt The Malloreon was just a rehash - same plot, same quest, etc.

It ticked me off because it made me think Eddings was a sellout, basically writing the same story for the expensive hardcover editions.

I haven't read him since. But I do feel sorry for anyone who nearly burnt down their house.

He should retire and reap the benefits of being a very popular fantasy author.

I don't read much Eddings... in fact the only book of his i've read is The Redemption of Althalus, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I'm very undecided. If I were him, and I knew the books I was writing were of a lower standard than my previous ones, I would seriously consider giving it a rest.

Whatever he decides, will be the right decision here. I dont think there is a wrong way in this case.

I've read everything Eddings wrote and its ALL a rehash, The Belgariad and The Malloreon are in effect the same story as The Elenium and The Tamuli which is almost the same quest as Redemption of Althalus. Its the same story, the same legend just told in a differant way, Same devices differant protaganists.
I wonder, whats wrong with that ?
Most authers do the same, Pick up an Iam Flemming and you get a James bond story, Bond goes on a mission, gets betrayed by girl, almost dies, girl falls for Bond, Bond escapes, saves the day and gets girl.
Some of DG's books where the same, Bloodstone is hardly going down as a classic, he just put it out there to finish the series.
If in two weeks time I came back to re-write this message I would hate how I am writing it now, I would change everything, Iam Flemming would go and I would use Clive Cussler as an example instead, I think thats all Eddings has ever done, re-written the same story in an effort to tell his saga his way.
Certainly, anyone who has ever read the Riven Codex can see how much background he uses.

Eddings was one of my first discoveries that I made myself in the Fantasy world.. I was only just a teenager when I did so and I really loved all the characters in the Belgariad.

I've read all of his (and Mrs Eddings) work and i did enjoy them but it was like reading a Mills and Boon... once you've read one... you've read them all..

You could quite easily juxtapose characters from series to another and you'd be none the wiser.

However every so often I'll go through a re-read just to say Hi to some old friends!!
